Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will attend the match at Berlin’s Olympiastadion amidst a diplomatic row between his country and host nation Germany over a two-match ban handed to key Turkey defender Merih Demiral.
Demiral, who scored both Turkey’s goals in a 2-1 win over Austria in the last 16 on Tuesday, has been suspended by UEFA for celebrating with a gesture associated with Turkish right-wing extremist group Grey Wolves.
UEFA said in a statement it was banning Demiral “for violating the basic rules of decent conduct, for using sports events for manifestations of a non-sporting nature and for bringing the sport of football into disrepute”.
Germany’s Interior Minister Nancy Faeser warned “the symbols of Turkish right-wing extremists have no place in our stadiums”.
Turkey then summoned the German ambassador on Wednesday over politicians’ reactions to Demiral’s celebration.
Turkey’s Sport Minister Osman Askin Bak claimed the ban “has no legal basis and that we consider it to be purely political”.
Erdogan himself has said Demiral was just “showing his excitement” and several ministers and the spokesman of his governing AK Party have condemned Faeser’s reaction.
Turkey will again be roared on by tens of thousands of fans tonight, who have travelled to their matches around Germany during Euro 2024.
Germany is home to nearly three million people with Turkish roots.
Player to watch – Netherlands
Xavi Simons is a product of Barcelona’s La Masia Academy, and his game boasts admirable traits of “Total Football” – a tactical system common in Dutch and Spanish football in which any outfield player can take over the role of any other player – allowing the 21-year-old to impact a game from a multitude of positions.
Simons operates on both wings and also as an attacking midfielder for RB Leipzig, known for his running with the ball and for creating chances for his teammates. He also scored eight goals in 32 Bundesliga appearances to help Leipzig finish fourth.
If given the game time and attacking liberty by manager Ronald Koeman, Simons has the potential to be a standout player for the Netherlands against Turkey, allowing the Dutch a great chance to progress to the Euro 2024 semifinals.
Player to watch – Turkey
Even if Guler doesn’t feature, then Turkey can still draw on the attacking talents of 18-year-old Kenan Yildiz.
He helped transform Max Allegri’s dull Juventus side in Italy’s Serie A as his presence improved not only his fellow striker Dusan Vlahovic’s form, but also Juve’s wingbacks, allowing them space between the lines.
As one of Serie A’s most exciting attackers, Yildiz stands on the brink of stardom for Turkey, for whom he scored his first international goal against Germany in November last year.
Euro 2024 will be a homecoming of sorts for the lanky forward: Yildiz was born in Regensburg, Germany to a Turkish father and a German mother.
He will be hoping to elevate Turkey to semifinals after the country was disappointingly knocked out at the group stage in the last two Euros.
